Tonight, I simply want to share with readers
the song selections for Dad’s photo presentation during the visitation.
After choosing at least 50 photos from Dad’s
life, the funeral home compiled a beautiful video tribute to him that my family
will always cherish.
The first selection was Sammy Fain’s famous song
“I’ll Be Seeing You”, sang by the world-renowned Frank Sinatra. As the photos
were displaying on the screen, these stunning yet disheartening lyrics filled
the air…
“I'll
be seeing you in all the old, familiar places that this heart of mine embraces…all
day through. In that small café, the park across the way…” These words are very
befitting as some of my most precious memories with Dad were walking along the jogging
path that circles the small park facing Mom and Dad’s back porch. Our conversations
on those walks hold a sacred place in my heart.
Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” was the
second selection. Most know the infamous lyric, “Did you ever know that you’re
my hero?” Although there is so much truth to these words, the following is more
relevant to my Dad’s nature:
“It might have appeared to go unnoticed, but I’ve
got it all here in my heart…” Dad lived a humble and private life of servitude
to so many, and I will never forget these lesson he taught me daily in his
life.
The conclusion to the photo slides was accompanied
by Brad Paisley and Dolly Parton’s “When I Get Where I’m Goin’”. As much as I
want to selfishly spend one more day with my father in this broken world, I
smile when I think on the re-uniting Dad is having with so many that he loved.
“I'm gonna walk with my grandaddy and he'll
match me step for step. And I'll tell him how I missed him every minute since
he left…and then I'll hug his neck! Yeah, when I get where I'm going, there'll
be only happy tears…Don’t cry for me down here.”It’s hard not to cry down here, Daddy. Enjoy
finally meeting your Daddy in person. Hug Papa and Nene for us, as I know they and
so many others have anxiously awaited your arrival to Paradise.

Thank you, family, and friends. Until next time,
readers: this is “The Truman Blog”. I love you, Dad. Always and forever.
Your loving son,
~ Brian
